Where AI Actually Belongs in an SME’s Marketing Workflow

If your team is experimenting with AI, the question is not “Which marketing jobs can we automate?” It is “Where does this tool improve a sound process without removing the judgement customers rely on?” An AI marketing workflow for SMEs should make the work clearer, not merely faster. Map one real piece of work from customer question to published answer. Notice where people waste time, where information gets lost and where a mistake would be costly. Those are different problems and they call for different controls. ## Good places to start AI can help sort interview notes, compare themes in approved research, draft an outline from a clear brief and suggest plain-English revisions. It can prepare variations for a human to select, or turn an approved long explanation into a short draft for another channel. None of these requires the tool to decide what the business believes. Work from material you have permission to use. Remove personal or confidential details unless the tool and its data-handling have been approved for them. Record the sources for factual claims so a reviewer can check them. ## Keep judgement at the handovers A person defines the audience and purpose. A person decides which ideas are worth pursuing. A knowledgeable reviewer checks the offer, facts and tone. A named owner approves publication. If there is no owner, adding AI only accelerates the gap. For instance, a tool can propose five email subject lines. It cannot know that an apparently attractive promise would bring enquiries your team cannot serve. That is a commercial judgement, informed by the people closest to your customers. ## Review the workflow, not just the output After a few weeks, ask whether the process saved usable time, improved the finished work or generated better conversations. Count time spent correcting errors as well as time saved drafting. Stop or redesign steps that create more checking than benefit. Start with a repetitive, low-risk task you understand well, such as organising approved notes. Test whether it genuinely saves time after review. ### Can AI write customer-facing content on its own? It can produce drafts, but a person should verify claims, relevance and tone before publication. Review should match the risk of the message. ### How do we keep customer information safe? Use approved tools and data rules. Avoid uploading personal or confidential material without a clear lawful and organisational basis. ### How do we know the workflow is working? Compare total effort, including checking and corrections, alongside content quality and the quality of resulting enquiries.
